Event lighting is temporary on purpose
The distinction is worth making: one is installed, the other is set up. A wedding, a graduation party, a corporate evening, an anniversary: the lighting exists for a single evening. That changes the whole approach, because there is no version of this you fix next weekend.That single fact drives the rest of it. An installation is judged over years. An event is judged in about four hours. Everything is agreed in advance, since improvising on the day is how events go wrong.
The date is the only hard constraint
With an installation, the calendar has give. With an event, a delay is a failure. The lead time is longer than the work implies. A small display still needs a site visit, a plan, a power solution and a crew on the calendar.
Power is where outdoor events go wrong
Indoor events have power everywhere. A back yard, an outdoor venue usually has power in the wrong place. Ask about the power source and the cable routing before the design conversation feels finished. A beautiful plan nobody can energize is not a plan.And whoever is handling the lighting should be told what else is happening in the space, because a band, a caterer and a photographer all have requirements that touch the same square footage.

What tends to matter at an event
Two categories: mood and function. Atmosphere comes from the canopy and the feature areas. Function means the route in, the steps and the way out, and it gets forgotten until somebody trips. Both need to be in the plan. Only one of them gets remembered fondly.
Who else needs to agree
If the event is at a venue, the property has its own requirements. Access windows, load in times, attachment restrictions, and the strike deadline are all set by the venue, not by you. Introduce them before the week of. It is free and it prevents the most.
Scale
Planning an event, the temptation is to over specify. Dark surroundings lower the threshold, so what looks sparse on a plan often looks generous on the night. Contrast is what makes an evening look like an occasion. Even brightness makes it look like a work site. A designer who says the plan is already enough is doing you a favor.
